ECG urges reporting on VDI 2700 issues in car transport

In response to the immediate implementation of the updated VDI guideline 2700, ECG—the Association of European Vehicle Logistics—is proactively seeking insights from autotransport companies. Providers are encouraged to report any issues experienced during police inspections, loading, or unloading operations through a dedicated reporting form. This initiative aims to monitor the guideline’s implementation closely and ensure authorities handle it fairly.

Background: immediate implementation challenges

Introduced in September 2024 by the German Engineering Association (VDI), the updated guideline specifically addresses vehicle lashing on transporters. Implemented without a transition period, this sudden change has caused widespread disruption within the autotransport industry. As of late September 2024, fewer than half of the affected trucks have achieved certification, highlighting significant logistical bottlenecks.

To navigate these challenges, ECG held an open webinar on 24 September 2024, attended by over 200 industry professionals. The event provided insights from experts including representatives from VDI, TÜV Süd, and leading trailer manufacturers such as Kässbohrer, Lohr, RIMO, and Rolfo. To assist providers in understanding the new requirements, ECG has compiled a detailed FAQ document covering topics such as guideline implementation, certification processes, and equipment specifications. ECG recommends autotransport companies directly contact their respective trailer manufacturers for certification support, providing aggregated resources from Kässbohrer, Lohr, RIMO, and Rolfo for ease of access.

ECG advocates for transition period

ECG continues advocating for flexibility from German authorities and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), strongly urging the introduction of a transition period to support autotransport providers’ compliance efforts. The association emphasizes that previous guidelines from 2009 were effective in maintaining road safety and questions the additional administrative burdens and costs resulting from the current changes.
